Differential allowances for family allowances in the canton of Basel-Stadt

Massively higher child and education allowances have been in force in Basel-Stadt since 1.1.2020. Read here how you can claim your entitlements.

As part of tax proposal 17, the canton of Basel-Stadt has increased family allowances by CHF 75 per month from January 1, 2020. The amount of the family allowance is regulated at cantonal level, taking into account the minimum rates stipulated in federal law.

In the canton of Basel-Stadt, the following new rates apply:

- Child allowances CHF 275.- per month (previously CHF 200.-)

- Education allowances CHF 325.- per month (previously CHF 250.-)

All persons gainfully employed in the canton of Basel-Stadt are entitled. The relevant compensation office automatically processes the increase in the initial entitlement.

You should note the following for the second entitlement to allowances (intercantonal differential allowance):

If the beneficiaries work in different cantons with different rates, the second beneficiary is entitled to the statutory allowance and thus to a differential amount.

An example: A family lives in the canton of Baselland, one parent receives the child allowance (CHF 200) in the canton of residence, the other parent works in the canton of Basel-Stadt, is therefore entitled to the second entitlement and is entitled to the intercantonal differential allowance of CHF 75.

If you have employees with a second entitlement and minimum earnings of CHF 592 per month, you can register them with your competent family compensation fund for a differential supplement.

We will be happy to assist you with your registration. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or require further information.
